Why distributors ask for 3000 pixels
A cover is shown everywhere from a tiny icon on a lock screen to a full-screen player on a TV. Starting from 3000 × 3000 lets every store make its own smaller copies cleanly. Apple recommends 3000 × 3000 or larger with 1400 × 1400 as the minimum, and most distributors that send your music to Spotify, Apple Music and other stores ask for the same 3000 pixel square. Check your distributor's upload page for its exact rules and file size limit.
If the artwork is already square and larger, for example 4000 × 4000, resizing to 3000 only shrinks it. If it is not square, the centred crop trims the long sides; place the main element in the middle, or crop it yourself first with Crop Image.
Making a smaller image bigger
Many covers start life as a 1080 × 1080 social post or an image from a phone. You can type 3000 × 3000 and the image is scaled up smoothly, but it does not gain detail, and stores do reject artwork that looks blurry or pixelated. Upscale as little as possible: re-export from the original design file at 3000 pixels if you have it, and use enlargement only for photos that are already close to the size.
Things stores commonly reject
Beyond the size, stores review the content of the cover. Common reasons for rejection listed by distributors include website addresses and social handles, contact details, prices, logos you do not own, and artwork that does not match the artist or release name. Keep text readable at small sizes, since most people will see your cover as a thumbnail.
Save as JPG for photographic covers, or PNG for flat graphics with sharp text. Large PNGs can be heavy; if your distributor caps the file size, Compress Image brings a JPG under it.
