From a picture to text you can edit
Typing out the text of a picture is slow and full of typos. This tool reads the letters with OCR and gives you plain text to paste into a document, an email, a spreadsheet or a translator: a photo of a printed page or a notice, a screenshot of a chat or an error message, a receipt, a slide, a label or a page of a book. It accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC photos from an iPhone, BMP, GIF and multi-page TIFF, up to 20 images at once.
The text appears in a box on the page, where you can fix any mistakes before you copy it or download it as a UTF-8 TXT file. Photos taken sideways are detected and read the right way round, and small screenshots are enlarged first so small letters are read better. OCR works best on sharp, evenly lit printed text. Handwriting is often not recognised, and the layout of columns and tables is not kept, only their text.
Frequently asked questions
How do I copy text from an image?
Select the picture and click Extract text. After a few seconds the text appears in a box on the page: press Copy to put all of it on your clipboard, or download it as a TXT file. You can correct any word in the box before copying it.
Does it work with photos taken on a phone?
Yes, including HEIC photos from an iPhone. For the best result, photograph the page straight on, in good light and without shadows, so the letters are sharp. Photos taken sideways are turned automatically, but strongly tilted or curved pages give more mistakes.
Can it read handwriting?
Only neat handwriting in separate capital-like letters, and even then with mistakes. The OCR engine is trained on printed text, so joined-up writing, signatures and quick notes are usually not recognised. Typed and printed text, including screenshots, gives by far the best results.
Which languages are supported?
Twenty-four languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Russian and Arabic. Choose the language of the text before you start. If the picture mixes two, such as English and Spanish, choose both and they are read together.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The text is recognised inside your browser, on your own device, so screenshots of chats, receipts and documents are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Only the OCR engine and the language model (1 to 3 MB) are downloaded from this site the first time and kept in your browser.
