JPG to TIFF in 3 steps

  1. Select your JPG images, or drop them on the box.
  2. Choose the resolution to write into the file, such as 300 DPI.
  3. Click Convert to TIFF and download the files.

What the DPI setting does, and what it does not

Printers, publishers, stock agencies and archives often ask for TIFF files at 300 DPI. The converter writes a standard TIFF with lossless LZW compression that opens in Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity, Preview, Windows Photos and print software, and stores the resolution you choose in the file.

DPI tells a printer how large to print the pixels; it does not add detail. A 3000-pixel-wide photo at 300 DPI prints 10 inches (25.4 cm) wide, and at 600 DPI 5 inches. Converting a JPG to TIFF also cannot remove compression artefacts that are already there, but it stops new ones from being added each time you edit and save.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG to TIFF?

Select one or more JPG images, choose the DPI and click Convert to TIFF. Each image becomes a TIFF file, and several files download together in a ZIP. Up to 20 photos can be converted at a time, free and without a watermark.

How do I make a 300 DPI TIFF?

Choose 300 DPI before converting. The value is written into the TIFF, so layout and print programs place the image at the matching physical size. The pixel dimensions do not change, so the photo needs enough pixels for the print size you want.

Why is the TIFF so much bigger than the JPG?

JPG compresses photos by discarding detail, while TIFF with LZW keeps every pixel without loss. A TIFF of a photo is often three to six times larger than the JPG it came from. That is expected, and it is why print workflows use it.

Which compression does the TIFF use?

LZW with a horizontal predictor, a lossless method supported by all common TIFF readers, including Photoshop, Windows, macOS and printing systems. Colour stays 8-bit RGB, the same as in the JPG.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Images are decoded and converted inside your browser on your own device, so scans of documents and private photos are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even without an internet connection.
