MOV to MP4 without losing quality
MOV and MP4 are close relatives: both are containers built on the same structure, and the video inside an iPhone MOV is usually H.264 or HEVC, which MP4 can hold as well. In Fast mode the tool simply moves the video and sound into an MP4 file without re-encoding them, so a long video converts in seconds and keeps exactly the same quality.
iPhones set to High Efficiency record in HEVC (H.265), which newer phones and computers play, but some older players, smart TVs and websites do not. Choose Most compatible and the video is re-encoded as H.264, the format every device understands, while the AAC sound of the iPhone is kept as it is. That takes longer, roughly the length of the video or a little more on a recent computer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert MOV to MP4 for free?
Select the MOV file and click Convert to MP4. In Fast mode most iPhone and Mac videos are ready in a few seconds, because the video is copied rather than re-encoded. The MP4 downloads straight away, with no watermark and no sign-up.
Does converting MOV to MP4 lose quality?
Not in Fast mode: the video and sound are copied into the new file exactly as they are, and the page tells you when that happened. Most compatible re-encodes the video at high quality, which is hard to tell apart from the original.
My MP4 does not play on an old TV or in Windows. What now?
The video is probably HEVC (H.265), which iPhones use to save space. Convert it again with Most compatible: the video becomes H.264, which plays on every TV, computer, phone and website, at the cost of a longer conversion.
Can I convert a MOV to MP4 on my iPhone?
Yes. Open this page in Safari, tap the button, pick the video from your photo library and convert it. The MP4 is saved to the Files app, from where you can share it or save it back to Photos.
Which browsers can do this?
Fast mode only needs a recent browser. Most compatible uses the video encoder built into it. Chrome and Edge on a computer or Android phone work best. Safari 17 or later and recent Firefox versions also work, but they are slower with large videos. If your browser cannot do it, the page tells you before you start.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The video is processed by your own browser on your device, so it is never sent to us or stored anywhere. That also means there is no upload to wait for, which saves a lot of time with large videos.
