FLAC or MP3: when to convert
FLAC keeps music exactly as it was recorded, without losing anything, which makes it the favourite format for music collections and high-resolution downloads. The price is size: an album in FLAC usually takes several hundred megabytes, and many cars, older players and phones do not play FLAC at all.
Converting to MP3 at 320 kbps keeps the music sounding the same in normal listening while making the files several times smaller. Keep your FLAC files as the master copy and use the MP3s on devices where space or compatibility is limited.
Frequently asked questions
Will I hear the difference between FLAC and MP3 at 320 kbps?
In blind tests most people cannot tell a 320 kbps MP3 from the FLAC original, especially on phones, car speakers and normal headphones. The difference only shows on very good equipment with careful listening.
How much space do I save converting FLAC to MP3?
A FLAC file usually uses 25 to 35 MB for a four-minute song; the same song at 320 kbps takes about 9.6 MB, and at 192 kbps about 5.8 MB. A whole collection becomes three to five times smaller.
Does the conversion keep high-resolution audio?
High-resolution FLAC files, such as 24-bit and 96 kHz, are converted to standard 44.1 kHz MP3, which is the format every device plays. Keep the original FLAC if you want the high-resolution version.
Can I convert a whole album at once?
Yes. Select up to 20 tracks of up to 50 MB each, convert them together and download all the MP3s in one ZIP file.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser on your own device, so your music is never sent to us or stored anywhere, and you do not have to wait for big FLAC files to upload.
