MPG to MP4 in 3 steps

  1. Select your MPG or MPEG video, or drop it on the box.
  2. Click Convert to MP4.
  3. Download the MP4 when it is ready.

MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, the formats before MP4

MPG files hold MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video, the formats of Video CDs, the first digital cameras, TV capture cards, DVD recorders (.VRO) and standard-definition camcorders from JVC, Panasonic and Canon (.MOD). They usually carry MPEG audio (MP2) or Dolby Digital sound. Phones, Chromebooks, Chrome, Firefox and most social sites no longer play them, while MP4 with H.264 plays practically everywhere.

The converter decodes the MPEG picture and sound on your device and writes an H.264 MP4 with AAC sound at the same resolution and frame rate. MPEG files often use non-square pixels (a 4:3 TV picture stored as 720×576), so the MP4 is resized to the shape the file was meant to show. The MP4 is usually smaller than the MPG, because H.264 needs about half the data of MPEG-2 for the same picture.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MPG to MP4 for free?

Select the MPG file and click Convert to MP4. It is converted on your device and the MP4 downloads as soon as it is ready, with no watermark and no account.

Is MPEG the same as MP4?

No. MPG files use MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video from the 1990s and 2000s. MP4 is a newer container that normally holds H.264 video, which gives the same quality in roughly half the size and plays on every phone and browser.

Can it convert .MOD files from my camcorder?

Yes. JVC, Panasonic and Canon standard-definition camcorders save MPEG-2 video with a .MOD extension. Select the file as it is; the 16:9 or 4:3 shape of the recording is kept.

Does converting MPG to MP4 lose quality?

The video is re-encoded at high quality and the same resolution, so the difference is very hard to see. Old MPEG files often have visible blocks already; they are kept, not removed.

Which browsers can do this?

It uses the video encoder built into your browser, and usually takes less time than the video lasts on a computer. Chrome and Edge on a computer work best. Safari 17 or later and recent Firefox versions also work, a little more slowly. If your browser cannot do it, the page tells you before you start.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The video is converted by your own browser on your device, so it is never sent to us or stored anywhere. There is no upload to wait for, which matters with files of several gigabytes.
