Word documents in the open format
Many public administrations, schools and universities ask for documents in ODT, the open ISO standard, and people who work in LibreOffice or OpenOffice prefer it because it opens there with no compatibility warnings. The converter reads the DOCX file and writes a real OpenDocument text file: headings with heading styles and outline levels, fonts, sizes and colours, alignment and spacing, nested bulleted and numbered lists, tables with merged cells and shading, pictures, links, page size and margins, and headers and footers with page numbers.
Word-only features such as text boxes, SmartArt, charts, comments and tracked changes are not carried over, and footnotes are placed as numbered notes at the end. The result is a clean, editable document rather than a copy of every Word setting.
Frequently asked questions
Why would I need an ODT file?
Some government portals, public tenders and universities require ODT because it is an open ISO standard that does not depend on one company. It is also the native format of LibreOffice, so documents open there without compatibility warnings.
Can LibreOffice not open DOCX files directly?
It can, but saving as ODT is still asked for by many institutions, and a converted ODT avoids the compatibility mode and formatting surprises that sometimes appear when a DOCX is edited and saved back in LibreOffice.
Are lists and tables kept?
Yes. Bulleted and numbered lists become real OpenDocument lists with their levels, and tables keep their column widths, merged cells and cell colours. Pictures in the text are embedded in the ODT file.
Does it work with Google Docs?
Yes. Download your Google Doc as Microsoft Word (.docx) and convert it here, or download it directly as OpenDocument (.odt) from Google Docs if you only need the ODT file.
Is my document uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and converted inside your browser on your own device, so contracts, CVs, reports and letters are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even without an internet connection.
