Where M4A files come from
M4A is the audio format Apple uses. The Voice Memos app on iPhone and Mac saves recordings as M4A, songs bought on iTunes are M4A, and many Android recorders and WhatsApp exports use it too. Inside there is AAC audio, which sounds good in small files but is not accepted everywhere: some car radios, older MP3 players, online forms and editing programs only take MP3.
Converting to MP3 makes the audio playable on any device. A voice memo sounds the same at 128 kbps; for music, 192 or 320 kbps keeps the quality. Songs protected by Apple Music cannot be converted, because they are locked to the Apple Music app.

How do I convert an iPhone voice memo to MP3?
In Voice Memos, tap the recording, tap Share and save it to Files. Then open this page, select the M4A file and click Convert to MP3. The MP3 can be emailed, uploaded or played on any device.
Is M4A better quality than MP3?
At the same file size, M4A (AAC) usually sounds slightly better than MP3. The reason to convert is compatibility: MP3 plays on absolutely everything, from old car stereos to web forms that reject M4A files.
Can I convert Apple Music songs?
No. Songs downloaded from Apple Music are protected and only play inside the Apple Music app, so no browser can read them. Songs you bought on iTunes since 2009 and your own recordings are not protected and convert normally.
Can I convert several M4A files at once?
Yes. Select up to 20 files of up to 50 MB each, convert them together and download all the MP3s in one ZIP file instead of saving them one by one.
Are my recordings uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser on your own device, so personal voice memos are never sent to us or stored anywhere. After the page has loaded it even works without an internet connection.
