GIF to PNG in 3 steps

  1. Select your GIF images, or drop them on the box.
  2. Click Convert to PNG.
  3. Download each PNG, or all of them in a ZIP.

A still PNG from any GIF

GIF is limited to 256 colours and is mostly used today for logos, icons, stickers and animations. PNG shows exactly the same image but is accepted by more editing tools, slide decks and print services, and it is the better format to keep working on. Transparent pixels in the GIF stay transparent in the PNG.

An animated GIF is made of many frames, while PNG is a still image, so the converter saves the first frame of the animation. If you need every frame as a separate image, this tool is not the right one yet; for a still picture of a GIF, it is the quickest way.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert GIF to PNG?

Select one or more GIF files and click Convert to PNG. Each PNG downloads straight away, or all of them together in a ZIP. Up to 20 images can be converted at a time, free and without a watermark.

What happens to animated GIFs?

PNG holds a single picture, so you get the first frame of the animation as a PNG. The animation itself is not kept. To keep it moving, keep the GIF or turn it into a video.

Does GIF to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. A GIF can mark one colour as fully transparent, and those pixels stay transparent in the PNG, so logos and stickers can be placed on any background without a box around them.

Will the PNG look better than the GIF?

It will look exactly the same. GIF images have at most 256 colours, and converting cannot bring back colours that were removed when the GIF was made. What you gain is a format that editors and apps handle better.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Images are decoded and converted inside your browser on your own device, so scans of documents and private photos are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even without an internet connection.
