Old AVI videos, playable again
AVI is the format of countless videos from the 2000s: films and series in DivX or Xvid, recordings from digital cameras and camcorders, and clips saved by old Windows programs. iPhones, Android phones, Macs, smart TVs and sites such as YouTube or WhatsApp often refuse them, because the video inside uses codecs nobody supports any more.
The converter decodes the picture (DivX, Xvid, MPEG-4, H.264, Motion JPEG, DV, MPEG-1/2, Cinepak and other old codecs) and the sound (MP3, AC-3, AAC, PCM and ADPCM) on your device, then writes an H.264 MP4 with AAC sound at the same resolution. Pictures with non-square pixels, common in DV and DVD rips, are shown with the right proportions. Converting takes roughly as long as the video, a little more on phones.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert AVI to MP4 for free?
Select the AVI file and click Convert to MP4. The video is converted on your device and the MP4 downloads as soon as it is ready, with no watermark and no account.
Can it convert DivX and Xvid videos?
Yes. Most AVI files from the 2000s use DivX or Xvid, and they are the main reason AVI no longer plays on phones and TVs. They become standard H.264 MP4 files.
Does converting AVI to MP4 lose quality?
The video is re-encoded at high quality and the same resolution, so the difference is very hard to see. Old AVI files are usually small by today's standards, so the MP4 is often a similar size or smaller.
How long does the conversion take?
About as long as the video plays on a computer, and a little longer on a phone. A short clip is ready in seconds; a full film can take several minutes. Keep the page open until the download appears.
Which browsers can do this?
It uses the video encoder built into your browser. Chrome and Edge on a computer or Android phone work best. Safari 17 or later and recent Firefox versions also work, but they are slower with large videos. If your browser cannot do it, the page tells you before you start.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The video is processed by your own browser on your device, so it is never sent to us or stored anywhere. That also means there is no upload to wait for, which saves a lot of time with large videos.
