Watermark ID Card in 3 steps

  1. Select a photo or scan of your ID card or passport (JPG, PNG, HEIC or PDF; add the back as a second file).
  2. Type who the copy is for and why, then drag over the numbers you want to black out.
  3. Click Make safe copy and download it as a PDF or JPG.

Why a watermarked, partly blacked-out copy protects you

A plain copy of an ID card or passport is everything a fraudster needs to open a bank account, rent a flat or take out a loan in your name, and once you email it to a landlord, an employer or a hotel you no longer control where it ends up. Governments therefore recommend a "safe copy": the Dutch government (KopieID app) says to make the citizen service number unreadable and to write on the copy who it is for and the date; the French state service Filigrane Facile adds a text such as "Document exclusively for a rental application"; German law (§ 20 PAuswG) requires that a copy of the Personalausweis is permanently recognisable as a copy, and the interior ministry advises blacking out the access number (CAN) and the document number when they are not needed. A watermark naming the recipient and purpose makes a stolen copy useless anywhere else, because any other company sees it was meant for someone else.

This tool repeats your text in diagonal rows across the whole page, over the photo too, with alternate rows shifted so it cannot be cropped off or cloned away from one clean strip. Black boxes are painted into the picture itself and the result is saved as new pixels only: no text layer, no hidden original under the box, and no camera or GPS data from the phone photo. Black out what the recipient does not need, typically the document number, a personal or tax number, and the machine-readable lines at the bottom, which repeat the document number and date of birth. Leave the fields a bank or notary must check by law. Unlike the French service, your ID is never uploaded: the copy is made in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What should I write in the watermark on my ID copy?

Who the copy is for, what it is for, and the date, for example "Copy for Acme Lettings, rental application only, 15/10/2026". Keep it specific: a generic "COPY" stamp does not stop the copy being reused elsewhere, a named recipient and purpose does. The date is added for you if you keep the option ticked.

Which numbers should I black out on an ID card or passport?

Anything the recipient does not need. Usually that means the document number, a national or tax number (BSN in the Netherlands, the CAN on a German ID card), and the code lines at the bottom (MRZ), which repeat the number and your date of birth. A bank or notary may need the full document by law, so ask before hiding something they must check.

Can the blacked-out parts be recovered?

No. The black boxes are painted into the image and the whole page is saved again as new pixels, so the original numbers no longer exist in the file. A PDF scan is turned into a picture too, which removes any text layer that could still hold the number.

Should the watermark cover the photo?

Yes. The text runs across the whole document, photo included, so nobody can cut out a clean picture of your face and details. The medium strength keeps everything readable for the person checking your identity.

Can I add the front and the back?

Yes. Select both photos, front first; with PDF you get one file with a page for each side, with JPG one picture per side. Each page has its own black boxes: use the arrows under the preview to switch pages.

Is my ID card uploaded?

No. The copy is made in your browser on your own device and your ID is never sent to us or stored anywhere, unlike online services that process the file on their server.
