Plain text from Word 97-2003 files
A text file opens on every device and in every program, takes almost no space and is easy to search, translate or paste into a website, an email or a chatbot. The converter reads the .doc file and writes its text in reading order: one paragraph per line with a blank line in between, list items with their numbers or bullets, table cells separated by tabs so they paste neatly into a spreadsheet, and footnotes at the end.
Formatting such as bold, fonts, colours and pictures is not part of a TXT file, so it is left out by design. The file is saved as UTF-8, so accents and other alphabets such as Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese or Arabic are kept exactly. Text in Word shapes and text boxes is not included.
Frequently asked questions
Are tables and lists kept in the text file?
Their content is. List items keep their numbers or bullets at the start of the line, and each table row becomes one line with the cells separated by tabs, so you can paste them into Excel or Google Sheets and get the columns back.
Which encoding does the TXT file use?
UTF-8, the standard encoding that every modern editor reads. Accented letters and other alphabets come out correctly, even when the original document mixed several languages such as Spanish, Polish and Russian.
Can I extract text from a damaged .doc file?
Often yes. The converter reads the text through the document structure and, when that is broken, falls back to reading the text directly. Very old Word 6 and Word 95 files are supported for their text only.
What about headers, footers and footnotes?
Footnotes and endnotes are added at the end of the text with their numbers. Headers and footers, which repeat on every page, are left out of the text file so they do not interrupt your paragraphs.
Is my document uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and converted inside your browser on your own device, so contracts, CVs, reports and letters are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even without an internet connection.
