Compress Video in 3 steps

  1. Select your video, or drop it on the box.
  2. Choose a compression level or a size limit such as Under 25 MB.
  3. Click Compress video and download the smaller MP4.

How the video gets smaller

Phone videos are recorded with far more data than a screen needs: a minute of 4K from an iPhone easily takes 300 MB. The compressor re-encodes the picture as H.264 with a lower bitrate and, when it helps, a smaller frame such as 1080p or 720p, which looks the same on a phone or laptop. The sound becomes AAC, or Opus in Firefox, which cannot create AAC. Made in Chrome, Edge or Safari, the result is an MP4 that plays everywhere.

Choose a level, or a size limit if the video has to fit somewhere: under 10 MB for Discord without Nitro, under 25 MB for most email. With a limit, the bitrate is worked out from the length of the video, so the file lands just under it. Very long videos may need a lower resolution to fit, and the page tells you if the limit could not be reached.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a video for free?

Select the video, pick Recommended or a size limit, and click Compress video. The smaller MP4 downloads when it is ready, with no sign-up and no watermark. The page shows the size before and after, so you can see how much you saved.

How do I make a video under 10 MB for Discord?

Choose Under 10 MB · Discord before compressing. The tool works out the bitrate from the length of the video so the file stays under the limit. A short clip keeps a good picture; for a video longer than a couple of minutes, trim it first for a sharper result.

Will compressing reduce the quality?

A little, but usually not in a way you notice on a phone or laptop. Recommended keeps 720p, which is sharp on any phone, and Light keeps up to 1080p. If you need the full original resolution, Light changes the least.

Why is the result an MP4?

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound plays on every phone, computer, TV and website, and it is what WhatsApp, Discord, Instagram and email clients expect. MOV, WebM and MKV videos are converted to MP4 while they are compressed. Firefox cannot create AAC, so there the sound is Opus, which a few older players skip.

Which browsers can do this?

Compressing uses the video encoder built into your browser. Chrome and Edge on a computer or Android phone work best. Safari 17 or later and recent Firefox versions also work, but they are slower with large videos. If your browser cannot do it, the page tells you before you start.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The video is processed by your own browser on your device, so it is never sent to us or stored anywhere. That also means there is no upload to wait for, which saves a lot of time with large videos.
