Numbers files from a Mac or iPhone, opened in Excel

Apple Numbers saves spreadsheets in its own .numbers format, which Excel, Google Sheets and Windows cannot open. If a colleague or a client sent you one from a Mac, iPhone or iPad, you would normally have to ask them to export it again. This tool reads the Numbers file in your browser and writes a standard Excel workbook, so you can carry on straight away.

A Numbers sheet can hold several tables side by side, while an Excel sheet holds one grid, so each table becomes its own Excel sheet named after the Numbers sheet. Text, numbers, dates, times, durations and the last calculated results of formulas are kept, along with merged cells. Charts, pictures, cell colours and the formulas themselves are not carried over: you get the values as they were shown. Files protected with a password must be unlocked in Numbers first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a .numbers file on Windows?

Convert it to Excel here: select the .numbers file, click Convert to Excel and open the XLSX in Excel. Nothing needs to be installed and it works the same on Android and Chromebook.

Are formulas kept?

The results are. Every cell keeps the value Numbers last calculated, so totals and percentages look right, but the cells contain the numbers rather than live formulas.

What happens to a sheet with several tables?

Each table becomes its own Excel sheet, named after the Numbers sheet it came from (Sheet 1, Sheet 1_1 and so on), so no data is mixed together or lost.

Are charts and pictures kept?

No. The converter carries over the table data only. Charts can be rebuilt in Excel in a few clicks from the converted data.

My Numbers file has a password. Can I convert it?

Not while it is locked: the contents are encrypted. Open it in Numbers, remove the password under File > Set Password, and convert the unlocked copy.

Is my spreadsheet uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and converted inside your browser on your own device, so budgets, client lists and payroll figures are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even offline.
