AVIF: great for websites, awkward everywhere else

AVIF is a modern image format that makes pictures much smaller than JPG at the same quality, so more and more websites use it. When you save one of those images you get a .avif file, and older versions of Windows Photos, Photoshop, Office and many upload forms cannot open it.

Converting to JPG gives you the most compatible image format there is. Transparent areas are filled with white, since JPG does not support transparency; choose PNG instead if you need to keep them.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AVIF file?

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses photos about 50 percent better than JPG, which is why websites use it to load faster. Support outside browsers is still patchy, which is why many people convert it.

How do I open AVIF files on Windows or Mac?

Recent browsers open AVIF directly, so you can drag the file into Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari to view it. To edit, print or upload it elsewhere, convert it to JPG here and use the JPG instead.

Should I convert AVIF to JPG or PNG?

Choose JPG for photos: the file stays reasonably small and opens everywhere. Choose PNG for logos, graphics or images with a transparent background, because JPG fills transparent areas with white.

Does my browser support this converter?

The tool uses your browser to read the AVIF file. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all support it. If your browser is very old, update it or try another one.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The tool runs inside your browser on your own device, so your files are never sent to us or stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded you could even disconnect from the internet and it would keep working.
