Excel to VCF in 3 steps

  1. Select your Excel file (XLSX, XLS, ODS or CSV), or drop it on the box.
  2. Check that each column is read as the right thing: name, phone, email…
  3. Click Convert to VCF and open the file on your phone to import the contacts.

From spreadsheet rows to contacts on your phone

Each row of the sheet becomes one contact card. The converter reads column headers in English and 12 other languages (Nombre, Vorname, Téléphone, 携帯電話, Số điện thoại…) to tell the first name, last name, mobile, work phone, email, company and address apart, and it skips title rows above the table. When a header means nothing to it, it looks at the values instead, and you can change what any column holds before converting.

Phone numbers come out exactly as they are stored: a number Excel keeps as 612345678 does not turn into 6.12E+08, and a country code such as +34 can be added to every number that has none, which is what WhatsApp needs to recognise them. The result is a single vCard 3.0 file in UTF-8, the version iPhone, Android, Google Contacts and Outlook all import, with accents and non-Latin names intact.

Frequently asked questions

How do I import the VCF file into my iPhone?

Send the file to yourself by email or AirDrop, or save it in Files, and tap it: iPhone lists the contacts with an Add All Contacts button. From a computer you can also open icloud.com/contacts, click the plus button and choose Import Contact, and they sync to your iPhone.

How do I import it on Android?

Open the Contacts app, go to Fix & manage or Settings, choose Import from file and pick the VCF. On a computer, use Import at contacts.google.com: the contacts then appear on every phone signed in to that Google account.

My sheet has first and last names in separate columns. Does that work?

Yes. First name, last name, middle name and title columns are recognised and combined into the full name, and each part is also kept in its own field so your phone can sort by surname. A single Name column works just as well.

Why does Excel show my phone numbers as 6.12E+10?

Excel shows long numbers in scientific notation when the cell is formatted as General. The converter reads the whole number stored in the cell, so the VCF is right. If the sheet was already saved as CSV in that state, the last digits are gone, and the page warns you before converting.

Can I add a country code to all the numbers?

Yes. Type it in Country code, for example +44. Numbers that already start with + or 00 are left as they are, and the leading 0 of national numbers is dropped, so 07700 900123 becomes +44 7700 900123, the format WhatsApp needs.

Are my contacts uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser on your own device, so names, numbers and addresses are never sent to a server or stored anywhere. That matters when the list holds other people's personal data.
