Video to Text in 3 steps
- Select your video (MP4, MOV from an iPhone, WebM), or drop it on the box.
- Choose the spoken language or let it be detected, then click Transcribe.
- Copy the transcript or download it as TXT, or download subtitles as SRT.
Transcripts and subtitles from the video file itself
Only the sound track of the video is used: the tool takes out the audio, transcribes it with the Whisper speech model and gives you the text plus an SRT subtitle file. Use the transcript to write a description or a blog post from a video, to quote a talk, to check what was said in a recorded meeting or class, or to translate it. Use the SRT to add captions on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok or in a video editor, so people can follow the video with the sound off.
It works with MP4 and MOV from phones and cameras, screen recordings and WebM files, up to 50 MB for free. Everything happens inside your browser, so the video is never uploaded, which is faster for big files and safer for private recordings. The subtitle lines follow the pauses in speech; check the text before publishing, because names, brands and technical words can come out wrong. If the video is too large, first make it smaller with Compress Video, or extract the sound with Video to MP3.
Frequently asked questions
How do I transcribe a video to text?
Select the video file and click Transcribe. The sound is taken from the video and transcribed in your browser; when it finishes, copy the text or download it as TXT. The SRT button gives the same text as subtitles with timings.
How do I add the subtitles to my video?
Download the SRT file and upload it next to your video: on YouTube under Subtitles, in Premiere, DaVinci Resolve or CapCut by importing the captions file, or play it in VLC with the video. Keep the same name as the video and most players load it by themselves.
Can I transcribe a YouTube video?
This tool works with video files on your device, not with links. If you have the right to download the video, save it as MP4 first. For your own YouTube videos, you can download the original file from YouTube Studio.
Which video formats work?
MP4 and MOV (including iPhone videos), M4V and WebM, as long as your browser can play their sound. Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all read the AAC and Opus sound used by most videos. Files up to 50 MB are free.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The video stays on your device: the sound is read and transcribed inside your browser, and nothing is sent to us or stored. Only the speech model is downloaded from this site the first time.
