Two KB limits that pull in opposite directions

A 354 × 472 photo is small. Saved at normal quality it often weighs 25 or 30 KB, under the 40 KB minimum, and the form refuses it. Saved from a phone without resizing it is several megabytes and far too big in pixels. That is why so many people get stuck at the photo step.

This tool crops to 354 × 472 pixels, saves the best JPEG quality that stays under 120 KB and, if the file is still lighter than 40 KB, pads it with empty bytes inside the file. The picture does not change, so the upload checker sees a normal JPEG of the right size and weight.

Online file and printed photo

The visa centre FAQ treats them separately. The digital photo goes into the online form, while printed photos are 33 × 48 mm. If you also need prints, use our China visa photo page, which makes the 33 × 48 mm size with a print sheet. Make both from the same original picture so they match.

The FAQ also explains what happens if the upload keeps failing: after three attempts the system reminds you to bring a suitable photograph, and the visa centre uploads it for you when you come to submit. Getting the file right at home saves that extra step.

Getting a photo the officer will accept

The size check is automatic, but a person still looks at the face. Use a white or nearly white wall, light from the front, a straight neutral look, ears and eyebrows visible and no hair over the face. The tool does not replace backgrounds. If your wall is not white enough, Change Photo Background can whiten it before you resize, but check with your visa centre whether edited photos are accepted where you apply.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the China visa photo for the online form?

A JPEG of no more than 354 × 472 pixels, between 40 KB and 120 KB, according to the visa centre FAQ.

The form says my photo is too small. Why?

The file is probably under 40 KB. Make it here: if the JPEG is lighter than 40 KB the tool pads it to the minimum without changing the picture.

Can I reuse my US 2 × 2 photo?

Crop it again here. A square photo does not have the 3 to 4 proportions of the Chinese visa photo.

Is my photo uploaded to your site?

No. It is resized in your browser on your device.
