Who needs this file
Applicants inside India usually have their photo taken at the Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra during the appointment, so they bring no digital photo. The 630 × 810 upload is for people abroad who apply through an Indian embassy or consulate on the Passport Seva portal, where the photo, signature and supporting documents are uploaded by the applicant.
Our Indian passport photo page makes the printed 3.5 × 4.5 cm size at print resolution. This one gives the exact pixel size the portal checks, so you do not have to guess how the portal will rescale your picture.
Keep the photo light: the 1 MB is shared
The mission guidelines limit the application to five documents, photograph and signature included, and say the total of all uploaded documents must not be more than 1 MB. The size menu is set to Under 1 MB, but a 630 × 810 portrait does not need that much. Choose Under 200 KB or Under 100 KB in the File size menu and you leave room for the address proof and old passport scans.
Every delete and re-upload counts towards the 12 attempts. When they run out, the guidelines say the form has to be ignored and a new one filled in. Check the photo on your screen before you press upload, and compress the PDF documents before you start.
No retouching, no background swap
The guidelines say the photo must not be altered by computer software, and the background must be white. Cropping and scaling to the requested size is what this tool does; it does not smooth skin, change colours or replace the background. Take the photo against a white wall with even light from the front, about 1.5 metres from the camera as the guidelines suggest, with eyes open, mouth closed and no hair across the eyes.
