UPSC photo size

Guides to the 2026 UPSC application give the photo as a JPG between 20 KB and 200 KB, and older instructions set at least 350 pixels on each side. This page makes a file that meets both.

Which numbers to trust

UPSC publishes its photo rules as an instructions page on upsconline.nic.in, not in the exam notice, and guides copy them with small differences. For 2026, the most detailed guides agree on a JPG of 20 to 200 KB; a few older pages still say 300 KB. Earlier instructions also gave a pixel range of 350 to 1000 on each side. A 350 × 350 file between 20 and 200 KB meets every version we found, which is why this page uses it.

A 350 × 350 JPG of a face usually weighs 25 to 60 KB. If yours comes out lighter than 20 KB, the tool pads it to the minimum without touching the picture.

Name and date on the photo

Some UPSC cycles have asked for the candidate's name and the date the photo was taken printed at the bottom. If your instructions say so, add them first with the UPSC photo with name and date page, then bring the labelled photo here and frame it so the text stays inside the square. Adding text after resizing changes the pixel size.

Live photo and triple signature

During submission the portal captures a live photo with your webcam or phone and compares it with the uploaded one; a mismatch stops the application. Take both on the same day, with the same glasses and hairstyle, against a white wall. The signature is new as well: three signatures one below the other in black ink on white paper, in a single JPG of 20 to 100 KB. Resize Signature with 20 to 50 KB or 10 to 100 KB chosen keeps it inside that range.
