What the GDS form actually checks

Annexure II of the GDS notification is short: the photograph must be a .jpg or .jpeg file of no more than 50 KB. It does not give a pixel size or a minimum. Coaching sites print tables with 320 × 400 pixels or 30 to 100 KB, but those numbers do not come from the annexure, and a 100 KB file would be refused by a 50 KB limit.

Because no pixel size is set, this page uses 276 × 354 pixels, which is a 3.5 × 4.5 cm passport photo at 200 DPI. It is the shape officials expect when they look at a passport-size photo, and at that size a sharp JPG fits comfortably under 50 KB without visible loss.

Taking the photo at home

Stand in front of a plain white or light wall, facing a window, so the light falls evenly on your face. Look straight at the camera with your eyes open and nothing covering your face. Ask someone else to take the picture from about a metre away rather than holding the phone yourself; a selfie at arm's length distorts the face.

The tool does not change the background or check your pose. If your wall is grey or patterned, use Change Photo Background first and then come back here. Keep the original photo too: if you are selected, you will need printed passport-size photos for the documents, and they should match the one you uploaded.

Signature for the same form

The signature has its own limit of 20 KB. The India Post GDS signature page crops a photo of your signature, cleans the paper to white and keeps the JPG under 20 KB. Prepare both files before you start filling in the form.
