Why the name and the date are on the photo
A photo with the date printed on it shows how recent it is, and the name ties it to one candidate. Exam guides that follow UPSC closely report that the photo instructions want both at the bottom of the photo and that the photo must be recent: in recent cycles, no more than about 10 days old when the application window opens. The CSE 2026 notice itself sends you to the instructions page on upsconline.nic.in, so read it for the cycle you are applying in.
The same notice says you must also capture a live photo while filling in the form, and that both must be clear. The live photo is taken by the portal, so it carries no text. Wear the same glasses and keep the same look in both photos; your appearance at the exam and the interview is checked against them.
Band below or on the photo
Below the photo adds a white strip under the picture with your name on one line and the date on the next, in bold black letters sized to the width, so a long name stays readable. This makes the image a little taller. If the portal checks proportions, choose On the bottom of the photo instead: the text goes over the lowest part of the picture and the size stays the same. Keep your chin well above that area when you frame the photo.
Then fit the portal limits
Guides give different KB ranges for UPSC from one year to the next, so take the numbers from the instructions page on the day you apply. If the labelled photo is too heavy, run it through Compress Image; if it is lighter than the minimum, Increase Image Size in KB pads it without changing the picture. If the portal sets exact pixels, Exam & Visa Photo Resizer does pixels and KB together.
Other recruitment bodies, such as state public service commissions, ask for the same name and date strip. Type the date in the format their notice uses, for example 14-10-2026, or leave it empty to print today's date.
Frequently asked questions
Which date should be on my UPSC photo?
The date the photo was taken. If you have just taken it, leave the date empty and the tool prints today's date.
Should the name be in capital letters?
Write it as it appears in your application. The tool prints exactly what you type.
Does adding text change the photo size?
With Below the photo, the image becomes taller by the height of the band. With On the bottom of the photo, the size stays the same.
Is my photo uploaded to your site?
No. The text is added in your browser on your own device.
