Change photo background to white
A grey wall, a door or a cupboard behind you is enough for a form to bounce your photo. This puts you on a flat white background automatically, keeping the edges of your hair soft.

Where a white background edit is fine, and where it is not
For exam and job applications, college ID cards, office badges and most online forms, what matters is a clear face on a plain light background. A whitened background does that job, and the face is left exactly as it was. Bank exams run by IBPS, for example, ask for a light-coloured, preferably white background.
Passports and some visas are different. The Indian missions' guidelines say the passport photo must be unaltered by computer software, and the US Diversity Visa instructions treat manipulated photos as a reason for ineligibility. UK passport photos must not be edited either. For those, stand in front of a real white wall and use the photo as taken.
Getting a clean result
The cut-out is done by a portrait matting model (MODNet) that runs in your browser. It works best with one person facing the camera, in even light, with the head and shoulders inside the frame. A plain wall behind you gives the cleanest edges; very fine or curly hair against a busy background can keep a faint halo. If you see one, retake the photo a step further from the clutter, or with a lighter wall behind you.
Light grey and light blue are in the same menu if a form asks for them instead of white.
Then make it passport size
Changing the background does not change the size of the photo. For a printed 3.5 × 4.5 cm passport-size photo, open the result in Passport Photo Maker. For a form that checks pixels and KB, such as 200 × 230 px and 20 to 50 KB, use Exam & Visa Photo Resizer. Do the background first and the size second, so the crop is made on the clean picture.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a photo background white online?
Select the photo, keep White chosen and click Change background. The person is cut out and placed on pure white; download the JPG.
Can I use it for my passport photo?
Check the rules first. Indian, US and UK passport photos must not be edited by software, so take those against a white wall.
Does it make the photo passport size?
No, it only changes the background. Crop it afterwards with Passport Photo Maker or Exam & Visa Photo Resizer.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Only the cut-out model is downloaded once from this site. Your photo is processed in your browser and stays on your device.
